NISSAN ENGEL
Artist, innovator, poet and musician, Nissan Engel was born in Israel in 1931. Engel graduated from the Bezalel Beaux-Arts in Jerusalem. He holds a diploma in Theatre Design, Centre Dramatique de l’Est, Strasbourg, France. In the mid-1950s, he moved to Paris where he painted and worked on a variety of stage design and costume projects. Since 1960, his paintings have been exhibited at the Galerie Weil, Paris.
In 1965 he moved to New York and worked almost exclusively in the painting medium for the next 10 years. The works of this period are mostly graphic and characterized by his personal use of color. Engel is best known for his work in mixed media, manipulating disparate elements - including painting, drawing, collage and print-making - to create a harmonious lyrical composition. His art is personal and does not fit neatly within any movement. Engel died in November 2016.
