Ludmilla Kovaljova

Ludmilla Kovaljova was born in Moscow in 1952. She studied art at the Moscow Pedagogical Institute from 1971 to 1975. In recognition of her considerable talent she was chosen to become a member of the youth department of the Artist’s Association of the USSR. Ludmilla has wanted to be an artist since she was a young child. She describes her style as “New Romantic.” Contrary to what was prevalent with her contemporaries, “accusations and upheaval” have no place in her paintings; “I have enough peace within me!” Ludmilla paints impressions gained from her travels and forms history with delicacy and tenderness. The soft pastel tones and light brushstrokes are reflections of the “here and now”, portrayed with much fantasy and symbolism that is nevertheless manifested in everyday life. She is a master of the portrait but claims her subjects are only a means to an end. Faces are not to be of photographic likeness but rather landscapes through which the observer can stroll and from which endless stories can be read. In “Girl with Cat” she uses the image of her daughter to portray a confident yet sensitive young woman who yearns for liberty and freedom to chart the path for her own future, but who still seeks guidance and comfort (the cat on her lap). Ludmilla’s works are snapshots of fleeting moments of intensely real experience flowing between dreams and reality, unique and yet common to us all. Ludmilla Kovaljova’s works have been exhibited in Russia, Mongolia, Finland, Poland, Germany, Italy England, Japan and the United States (Boston, MA).
